Rafter Length Calculator for Gable Roofs

This rafter length calculator estimates one common rafter for a symmetrical gable roof from the full outside-wall span and pitch. The estimate includes actual ridge thickness and horizontal overhang.

Overhang and ridge thickness. Changing these updates the common rafter estimate.

Planning geometry only; not a structural, permit, or final-cut approval. Confirm local requirements and approved drawings, then test-fit one template rafter before cutting the set.

Understand your rafter length result

Read the total estimate first. It combines the rafter's structural line with the sloped tail beyond the wall. Copy those numbers from the calculator if you need them off the page.

Total common rafter estimate = structural line length + sloped tail length

Total common rafter estimate
Use this first when planning the geometric length of one common rafter. It is not a final cut length.
Structural line length
This is the sloped distance from the outside wall line to the ridge face. The calculator deducts half the actual ridge thickness from the run first.
Sloped tail length
This is the roof-line length beyond the wall. The calculator converts the horizontal overhang input with the same pitch multiplier.
Imperial tape display
In Imperial mode, the main result is also rounded to the nearest 1/8 in and shown in feet and inches.
Theoretical equal-pitch hip value
This secondary value is only a centerline estimate. It excludes the tail, ridge termination, backing, drop or chamfer, jack layout, and field cuts.

What to measure before you calculate

The rafter length calculator starts with the full outside-wall span, then derives the adjusted run for one side of a symmetrical gable roof.

Horizontal measurements are calculator inputs. The drawing explains the measurement points and is not a framing detail.
Span is the full building width
Measure from the outside face of one wall to the outside face of the opposite wall. Do not enter the run for one side.
Use actual ridge thickness
Measure the ridge material's actual horizontal thickness. The calculator deducts half from each side; nominal size can differ from actual size.
Overhang is a horizontal input
Measure from the outside wall line to the eave horizontally. The calculator converts that input to the sloped tail shown on the roof line.

How to use the rafter length calculator

  1. 1

Choose Imperial or Metric. Use one unit system for every measurement you enter.

  2. 2

Enter the full outside-wall span and the roof pitch. Span is the full building width on a symmetrical gable, not the run to the ridge.

  3. 3

The estimate already includes a typical overhang and ridge thickness. Open More measurements to change the horizontal eave overhang or the actual ridge thickness — not a ridge height.

  4. 4

Read the total common rafter estimate first and copy it if you need the numbers off the page. Open How we got this to compare the structural line and sloped tail.

Common Rafter Length by Span and Pitch

Structural line length for these Imperial reference spans. Values assume no ridge thickness or overhang, so enter your dimensions in the calculator for a complete common-rafter estimate.

How rafter length is calculated

The calculator uses the documented horizontal measurements to estimate a common rafter for a symmetrical gable roof.

The formulas

adjusted run = (span ÷ 2) − (ridge thickness ÷ 2)

Span is outside wall to outside wall; ridge thickness is its actual horizontal thickness.

structural line length = adjusted run × √(1 + (pitch/12)²)

The square-root part is the pitch multiplier. It turns the horizontal run into sloped length.

common rafter estimate = structural line length + (horizontal overhang × multiplier)

The overhang is measured horizontally past the outside wall, then converted to its sloped tail length.

Imperial Worked Example: 24 ft Span at 6:12

Half the 24 ft span is 12 ft. A 1.5 in ridge is 0.125 ft, so adjusted run = 12 − (0.125 ÷ 2) = 11.9375 ft.

Pitch multiplier = √(1 + (6/12)²) = 1.118. Structural line length = 11.9375 × 1.118 = 13.35 ft.

A 12 in (1 ft) horizontal overhang adds 1 × 1.118 = 1.12 ft of sloped tail length.

Using the unrounded values, the common rafter estimate is about 14.465 ft. The calculator shows 14.46 ft. Confirm the layout and test-fit one template before cutting the set.

Equal-pitch hip centerline estimate

hip centerline = √(2 × adjusted run² + rise²)

For equal pitches, this secondary value follows the 45-degree diagonal between two slopes. It is a theoretical centerline estimate, not a final member length.

It excludes tail, ridge termination, backing, drop or chamfer, jack layout, and field cuts. Use a dedicated framing layout or professional plan for hip work.

Common calculation mistakes

These inputs can produce a plausible number while using the wrong measurement.

  • Entering the run as the span

You might measure only from one wall to the ridge. Enter the full outside-wall span instead. The calculator divides it in half and deducts half the actual ridge thickness.

  • Entering a sloped tail as the overhang

Measure from the outside wall line to the eave horizontally. Do not enter the sloped rafter tail because the calculator converts the horizontal overhang.

  • Using a nominal ridge size or missing the deduction

Lumber's nominal size can differ from its actual thickness. Measure the ridge material and enter that horizontal thickness so the calculator can deduct half of it. Do not skip that deduction.

Before you cut or order lumber

Use this value to compare common-rafter geometry and to estimate stock length.

Layout still needs the actual plumb cuts, seat cut, tail profile, ridge termination, and field conditions.

Rafter size and spacing depend on species, grade, span, spacing, and roof loads. This calculator does not choose a section, give a span table, or count rafters.

Local requirements and approval come from the authority and the approved drawings for the project. This calculator does not check them.

Measure built conditions and test-fit one template rafter before cutting the set.

Questions about this common-rafter estimate.

When this is the wrong calculator

The numbers above are for one common rafter on a symmetrical gable. Change the inputs to try another set, or copy the result from the calculator.

  • Copy the total, structural line, and sloped tail from the calculator if you are taking the numbers to a note or a message.
  • A lean-to or other single-slope roof against a wall is a different layout. Use the lean-to roof pitch calculator for wall heights and that slope.
  • If you still need the pitch, measure roof pitch first, then come back.
  • This page deducts actual horizontal ridge thickness from the run. It does not calculate ridge beam height.
  • Rafter size, spacing, and how many rafters you need depend on span tables and the approved drawings. This calculator does not make those choices.
